FRENCH EMBLEMS AT GLASGOW.

The Project

The Glasgow Centre for Emblem Studies has been awarded a grant of £163,385 by the Arts and Humanities Research Board for the digitisation of the corpus of French Sixteenth Century Emblem Books under the Resource Enhancement Scheme. A list of the books to be digitised is given below. The grant runs from September 2004 to September 2006.

Director: Alison Adams

Associate Director: David Weston

Assistant Director: Stephen Rawles

Technical Officer: Graeme Cannon

Consultant: David Graham

Expert Advisers: Peter Boot; Hans Brandhorst

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant: Jonathan Spangler

Postgraduate Assistants: Brian Aitken; Julie Barr

The end product will be a sophisticated website, including high quality images of some 5500 pages, fully searchable text, and a full apparatus of indexes for both text and images.

Initial training and consultation during the project will involve generous contributions in kind from the Constantijn Huygens Institute and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

All but two of the works to be digitised are in the Stirling Maxwell Collection in Glasgow University Library; images for Scève's Délie of 1544 will be provided from the Bodleian Library, and for Boissard's Emblemes of 1595 from the Bibliothèque Mazarine.

The Project will be undertaken within the OpenEmblem initiative http://media.library.uiuc.edu/projects/oebp/, using the Spine of Information Headings for Emblem-Related Electronic Resources http://www.ces.arts.gla.ac.uk/html/spine.htm.
